Top 40 Songs of 2011
21 – Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People

Pumped Up Kicks might sound cheerful, but if you listen more closely to the lyrics, you’ll find that the song is talking about something dark, about a kid entertaining homicidal thoughts. “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you’d better run, better run, outrun my gun.” Aside from this eerie combination of seeming playfulness and troubling thoughts, the sound is something you can dance to, but in a different way from the usual dance songs of this decade. Just shake whatever body part you can think of and you’d already be dancing to its tune. The song doesn’t hide behind an aura of glamour, mystery, or celebrity; it’s simply a catchy and friendly tune that deserves multiple listens.
