Taylor Swift premieres single “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” from new album “Red”

Taylor Swift announced via an August 13 live webchat that her new album Red will be released on on October 22.
The country-pop star says that she has been working on her upcoming album for two years. “When I was coming up with the name for this album, it was crazy because it was really simple. I wrote a song called ‘Red,’ and thinking about what that means to me and all the different emotions that are written about on this album, they’re all pretty much about the kind of tumultuous, crazy, insane, intense, semi-toxic relationships that I’ve experienced in the last two years. And all those emotions spanning from intense love, intense frustration, jealousy, confusion, all of that, in my mind all of those emotions are red. There’s nothing in between. There’s nothing beige about any of those feelings, so i called the record Red.”

This will be Taylor Swift’s fourth studio album, coming after the success of her 2010 album Speak Now. Red will contain sixteen tracks (not including bonus tracks) that the singer-songwriter has picked from between 30 to 35 songs.
The singer explains how the album came to be, “I tend to kind of skew in the direction of writing songs about love-related things, realtionship-, feeling-related-esque-type situations, and so that’s kind of where I naturally go. But I ended up being inspired by a lot of really crazy sort of zero-to-a-hundred-and-then-hits-the-wall-and-then-explodes relationships, which are so fun to write about, really dysfunctional and not good generally, but when you write about them, it gives you a lot of inspiration. So there were the things that I went through personally, and then there are stories that I kind of witnessed going on around me, whether it was a friend’s relationship or someone who I saw going through something and it inspired me. When i’m writing an album, my world kind of becomes a big storyboard and everyone in it becomes a character or has the potential to become a character and all my friends and family members and everybody around me kind of knows that. So the last two years have been really inspirational, I was just constantly writing and that’s why there are so many songs in the new album.”

Taylor has also been co-writing on this new album. “When it came to approaching this album, I really wanted to go back to the drawing board and think about a different way to approach it. And so I just thought why not call all of my songwriting, producing, and artist heroes and see if they wanna work together. I just make the call and see. And when I did that, I got to the opportunity to work with some of my absolute favorite people in music. And so this album is full of co-writes, and it’s full of different people producing different things, and it’s got a lot of collaborations going on,” she says. Included in the new album is a song she co-wrote and recorded as a duet with British musician Ed Sheeran while sitting on a trampoline. She also worked with Swedish music producer Max Martin who has worked on several top-ten singles including ones from Usher, Britney Spears, Adam Lambert, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and Pink.
During the webchat, she also premiered “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” the first single from her upcoming album. Listen to the actual premiere below.
