The music video starts off with an explanation of what Yuoy is: a combination of Yo, Yun, and Hoy used as a greeting or to express excitement and/or appreciation.
There’s a certain element to the song Yuoy! that makes it a good listen for both hiphop enthusiasts and an open-minded mainstream music listener. It has what I like calling “crossover potential.” You don’t need to be deep into the hiphop culture to appreciate the song. The lyrics speak of positivity which isn’t exactly new, but the way Q-York spits this out via the lyrics is exciting. But what really caught my attention was the beat. The lyrics might be telling us to “pay attention, even if you broke, participate,” and I’m sure it’s not exactly referring to us dancing. But the beat alone is so infectious that I would just go crazy if I refused myself to even just nod my head to it. I would break if I don’t participate.
The music video was shot at the Ronac Art Center and directed by Waise Azimi. You will also see a lot of other artists and celebrities in the video. Here’s a few of the ones I can instantly recognize without pausing the video: the Philippine Allstars, Gab Valenciano, Alex Crisano, Champ, Nyko Maca, JayR, Krista Kleiner, Marcus and Amber Davis.
Yuoy! by Q-York is a single off their album Q-York City available in your favorite record bars nationwide under JayR’s label Homeworkz and distributed by Universal Records Philippines. The album is also available for digital download via CDBaby.
