One More Night by Maroon 5: a fight between mind and body

After the success of Payphone, Maroon 5 released One More Night as the second single from their upcoming fourth studio album Overexposed.
“You and I go hard at each other like we’re going to war,” and you just know that this is not about sunny places and rainbows and dancing like Mick Jagger. One More Night has Adam Levine singing about not getting along with his lady love but still being unable to just leave. It’s the classic fight between mind and body.
Trying to tell you no, but my body keeps on telling you yes
Trying to tell you stop, but your lipstick got me so out of breath
I’d be waking up, in the morning probably hating myself
And I’d be waking up, feeling satisfied but guilty as hell

I love how the song opens strongly with Adam Levine singing “ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh” over reggae-style guitars. Then the words of the verse hit like punches in quick succession. The lyrics, the beat and the pace produce an unsteady atmosphere of conflict. The start and the verse are just so strong that I can’t help but feel let down by the end of the hook, if only because it sounds weak compared to everything that came before.

The song was written by Adam Levine, Shellback, Savan Kotecha and Max Martin. Savan Kotecha, if you must know, is also a voice coach in The Voice, where Adam is one of the judges-slash-coaches. He also co-wrote other hits like the One Direction’s What Makes You Beautiful. Shellback, besides co-writing Maroon 5′s 2011 smash hit Moves Like Jagger, also collaborates regularly with Max Martin.
Watch Adam Levine play a struggling boxer in the official video for One More Night. The music video was directed by Peter Berg and also stars Minka Kelly.
