American Idol Season 7 winner David Cook has released the music video for his new single, The Last Goodbye. The song comes from his highly anticipated second album, This Loud Morning.

The song was co-written by OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder who has also done work with Adele, Beyonce, and Far East Movement, as well as other Idols like Blake Lewis, Jordin Sparks, and Kelly Clarkson.

With this uptempo rock song, David Cook seems to be leaning more to a slightly heavier rock vibe than his previous releases. And it is a good thing. While his more mellowed down soft-rock vibe was good, I admit that I’ve actually been waiting for him to explore a sound that fits him better.

Upon first listen, The Last Goodbye sounds like a song you know you’ve never heard but still sounds familiar. It doesn’t push at you to listen to it. Listening to it feels very natural. Maybe because the theme is something that comes to everyone.

Everyone has had a broken heart and has had to say goodbye. Those dealing with broken hearts know how hard it is to say that last goodbye. Sadness, pain, and helplessness all come together. Even when you’ve said a literal goodbye, you keep on saying goodbye even if it’s just inside your mind. And there is a part of you hoping that it is indeed the last time you are saying goodbye, even when there are memories and thoughts that still linger. “I didn’t want to let you go, but wherever we are, we’re miles apart, I know that we tried, but this is the last goodbye”.

The Last Goodbye has its share of rephrased cliches. “Cause we were everything that’s right at the wrong time,” David Cook sings. And that is what’s good about it. Because David is the one singing, the sappiness of the oft-used lyrical concept of “we had the right love at the wrong time” is avoided. Because of David’s vocals, this becomes easier to relate to as a real feeling. Whenever he says “the last goodbye”, you just know that it comes from memories and thoughts, and not just out of cheesiness.
